Krishnattam Kathakali
Krishnanattam is one of the lesser understood, however, highly organised and beautifully maintained temple dance drama forms from Kerala, India. The Dance form in its recital form is the celebration of 8 stages of eight chapters of Shri Krishnagiti by King Mananveda of Zomorin of Calicut in the year 1645. Often confused as Kathakali, the from is distinguished itself as a separate from owing its patronage from Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple - Thrissur in Kerala.
The artform is known for it's elaborate headgears and the costumes denoting many spiritual aspects of Lord Krishna's Life. The most noticeable one being of the peacock feathers which adorn the mask. The story of feathers goes such, King Manaveda once told Vilwamangalam about his ambition to view Krishna. The next day the Swamiyar told him Manaveda can see Guruvayurappan playing in the early hours of the morning at the platform of the Elanji tree. The King was also warned that he could only see and not touch Him. When Manaveda saw Guruvayurappan in the form of little child, he was so excited that he forgot himself and, rushed to embrace little Sree Krishna. Guruvayoorappan immediately disappeared saying, "Vilwamangalam did not tell me that this will happen". However, Manaveda got one peacock feather from the head gear of Bhagavan Krishna. The peacock feather was incorporated in the headgear for the character of Sri Krishna. It was performed near the sanctum sanctorum of the Guruvayur Temple. And the artform is still maintained by Gurvayur Devaswom and staged as an offering by the devotees.
